St. Gerard Maiella, C.SS.R.
Wonder-Worker,Ornament and Glory of the Redemptorist Order,
Powerful Protector of the Mother and her Unborn Child
          Pray For us!

Gerard Maiella was born in Muro, Lucano,Italy on April 6,
1726; he died of tuberculosis on October 16,1755 at the age of 29.
Gerard’s father, Domenico, who was a tailor, his mother, Benedetta,
and three older sisters were an ordinary, hard-working, pious family.

Gerard Maiella joined the Redemptorists (Congregation of
the Most Holy Redeemer) at the age of 23 and became a professed
Lay Brother in 1752. On July 16th, the Feast of Our Lady of
Mt. Carmel, Brother Gerard took his vows of POVERTY,CHASTITY
and OBEDIENCE and the oath of  PERSEVERANCE UNTIL
DEATH.  Two months later, Brother Gerard made his Fifth Vow -
“To do always that which was pleasing to God.” He was always with
the children, the sick, the poor and converted many sinners to
Repentance, and whenever Obedience demanded his presence Gerard
was there to  “do the Will of God.” He would say, “I wish only what God
wants” and his last request before he died at the Congregation’s House
in Materdomini, Italy, was that a small white placard be tacked to his
door with the inscription “Here the Will of God is done, as God Wills,
and as long as God Wills.” (This placard on St. Gerard’s room at
Materdomini can still be seen today.)

A Lay Brother,he takes the same Vows as all Redemptorist
Priests - POVERTY, CHASTITY and OBEDIENCE. Today, in the
Constitutions of the Lay Brothers of the Congregation, St. Gerard
Maiella is named their Patron and Model. (Reference- “The Story
of St. Gerard Maiella,C.SS.R. by James J. Galvin, C.SS.R.”)

Brother Gerard had such great piety, extraordinary wisdom
and a gift of reading consciences.  He was a humble Servant of God.
His three great devotions were the Blessed Sacrament, Our Lady,
and The Crucifix. His life was filled with ecstasies and wonderful
miraculous works of God. Impossible things happened because of him
and his great Faith and special Favor with God.

Because of the many Miracles performed through Brother
Gerard’s intercession, he was Beatified in 1893, and on December 11,
1904, Pope Pius X proclaimed his Solemn Canonization at St. Peter’s
in Rome.  “Brother Gerard of Muro and Materdomini was now Saint
Gerard of Heaven and the whole world.”
